How to use the shrimp trade data
Shrimp Insights compiles and analyzes trade data supplied by Global Trade Tracker. The data directory states the coverage and latest available month for each market.
What is covered?
The directory contains 10 import markets and 11 export origins. Each page covers the source’s shrimp classifications, with national product definitions. Coverage is not independently certified customs completeness. These flows do not represent total world shrimp production or consumption.
Imports exclude intra-EU trade. Export series use reported exports except Venezuela, which uses partner-reported mirror imports. Alternative direct and mirror records are not added together. Export records without kilogram quantities are excluded from both volume and value.
Units and calculations
- Volume
- Total source kilograms divided by 1,000, expressed in metric tonnes (MT).
- Value
- Sum of existing USD values. Source currency assumptions are disclosed on affected market pages.
- Weighted unit value
- Total USD divided by total kilograms. This is a trade unit value, affected by product and partner mix; it is not a farm gate or spot price. Positive value on zero-weight records remains in the value total.
- Year-on-year growth
- Change against the same months a year earlier. Missing months or a zero previous-period denominator suppress the comparison.
- Partial years
- Only available source months are included. Missing months are not assumed to be zero. The public annual tables contain reported totals, without projections.
Comparing countries and sources
Import and export values may differ because of valuation, reporting dates, trade routes and classification. Do not add imports and exports to create a global total. The dashboard’s comparison view uses HS 030617 and a common end month; country pages cover all available shrimp classifications and may end in different months.
Freshness and corrections
“Data through” identifies the latest source month. “Snapshot loaded” identifies when the source was imported, not the day the statistics were originally released. Pages update from the same connected snapshot as the dashboard; a dated bundled snapshot is used when connected data are unavailable. Historical figures can be revised.
Source refreshes validate schema, units, date coverage and unexpected shrinkage before replacing the snapshot. These checks do not establish independent completeness of the original customs reports.
Attribution and reuse
Credit Shrimp Insights for the analysis and Global Trade Tracker for trade data. Cite the market page, selected period, snapshot date and your access date. Public access does not grant a bulk redistribution licence. Contact Shrimp Insights about reuse, methodology or corrections; include the market, period, filters and figure concerned.
